Gangotri Temple is a sacred Hindu sanctum located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the four sacred sanctuaries in the Char Dham Yatra and is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, one of the most sacred deities in Hinduism. 

Gangotri Temple Mythology

 According to Hindu tradition, the swash Ganges is believed to have begun from the matted cinches of Lord Shiva. It’s said that the goddess Ganga descended to the earth to cleanse the ashes of King Bhagiratha’s ancestors, who had performed severe austerities to assuage Lord Shiva. Still, the immense power of the swash was too important for the earth to bear, and Lord Shiva agreed to break its fall by letting it flow through his matted cinches. The holy River Ganges generates from the Gangotri glacier from here and is called Bhagirathi.

Gangotri Temple Mythology is that Lord Rama visited Gangotri Temple during his exile. It’s also said that the Mandir was visited by Lord Hanuman, who’s believed to have worshipped the goddess Ganga at the Temple and acquired blessings from her. In Vedas, Puranas, Ramayan, Mahabharat river Ganga is called as Ganga Devi.

Gangotri Mandir History

According to Gangotri temple history, Mandir was built at a point where the Ganga River first touched the earth. The Temple of Gangotri is believed to have been established by the savant Bhagiratha, who brought the swash Ganges to the earth. The Mandir is said to have been built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. Temple had rebuilt many times over the years. 

Gangotri Temple Significance

Gangotri Temple significance is very important for Hindus and thousands of pilgrims visit the Temple every time to offer their prayers and seek blessings. The Mandir is open for callers from May to October when the harsh mountain rainfall makes it possible to pierce the area. Gangotri Temperature mainly around 10°C to 20°C. The rest of the time, the deity of the goddess Ganga is kept near Mukhba vill, where it’s worshipped until the coming season.
