Ladakh has always been known for cold cat, dry and isolated areas but veritably many people know about climbing peregrinations in Ladakh region. It is one of the most mesmerising and mesmerising mountains that offers a panoramic view of the entire Zanskar region. The region includes peaks over 5000 metres in height and some of them are notorious around the world for their coolness, such as Mount Kun Nun in the Suru Valley.
Abiding in Kargil District of Jammu & Kashmir, India, Mount Kun and Mount Nun is known for its majestic, edgy and rocky face. These mountains are the highest in the region, with Mount Nun at 7135m and Mount Kun at 7077m. These mountains can be seen fluently once you reach the region and will be visible throughout the trip to Kargil. Both the mountains are separated by a snow table which makes it delicate to climb both the peaks in one go. It’s a gruelling and tiring passage because of numerous glaciers, edgy escarpments, rough terrain and icy crests. To climb any of these binary mountains, one has to have complete knowledge and experience of mountaineering. It requires all the master ways and tools with rovers who have formerly done peaks with 6000 elevation.
The trip to these beautiful binary pinnacles start with the wharf in Leh megacity. It’s a beautiful and spiritually enlightened megacity of Ladakh region. Then you can visit a friary that lies between snow- limited mountains like one in Hemis, the biggest and notorious one. Also some old bones Like Thiksey and Shay which belong to the 15th century. This stint to cloisters will also be salutary for you to get adapted to the rainfall and high altitude. You’ll be witnessing numerous other cloisters too while moving ahead on the trip towards Kargil. It’s nearly 230 kms from Leh megacity with the view of barren mountains and isolated area. Then, the enrollment and authoritative formalities have to be done as there’s no entry without a permit. Also, the last drive will be till Tangol village, where the touring trip thresholds, and then you’ll get the view of the binary peaks.
This journey will take you through barren, rocky, snowy and icy roads to the summit. It’ll be a 5- 6 hrs journey till the base camp, also depending on group pace. Generally people reserve a day or two for base camp as there could be changeable rainfall at any time of the day plus they get time to adapt to the altitude. During this time people generally go hiking near escarpments and prepare themselves for coming. After this there will be usual drills of moving further and setting camps at sight 1 also at sight 2 and getting adapted. If there will be demand of setting up ropes and anchors further also perambulators go ahead, set the track and come back to the former camp.
The final day of peak is tough and tiring whether you have chosen Mount Kun or Mount Nun for passage. The trail goes through a loose rocky face first where you have to main your way. It’s always suggested to use a stick while walking as it helps in balancing. Now onwards, you’ll also see some snow patches around and some icy glaciers which makes walking indeed more delicate. The trail also begins to go steep with shadows around for some time as it generally keeps moving. While you reach the top the temperature will be bone nipping and wind will be quite harsh. But the panoramic view from the mountain will be really spectacular. Standing high on one giant mountain and overlooking other titans is truly inimitable.
Now while going back to base camp, the pedestrians have to be veritably careful on the trail as climbing loose beaches and slippery ice is better than descending one. Also, after this awful and successful passage the group will be resting at the base camp for the night and coming morning transport will drive back to Leh via Tangol and Kargil.
